Hydrogeology

Hydrogeology - Distribution and Movement of Groundwater

Hydrogeology (hydro- meaning water, and -geology meaning the study of the Earth) is the area of geology that deals with the distribution and movement of groundwater in the soil and rocks of the Earth's crust. TEC Ltd provide a comprehensive hydrogeological consulting service.

Groundwater supply

Groundwater supply

Groundwater is a high-quality, cost-effective and reliable long-term water supply option for many municipal, industrial, and domestic water supply applications. TEC Ltd offers a comprehensive array of groundwater exploration and development services, to provide a sustainable supply of water.

Pumping and aquifer tests

Groundwater Hydrogeology Pump

TEC Ltd can carry out pumping tests in existing or new wells in order to determine the sustainable yield of any water supply. Where groundwater supplies are relied upon as a primary water source it is necessary to quantify the sustainable yield. The most effective way of completing such an analysis is by carrying out a pumping test. Pumping tests can also provide information on the impacts that a new or existing supply may have on nearby wells, springs or other potential targets. Qualitative analysis of well water can also be completed for a full suite of chemical and microbial parameters, with water treatment technologies proposed where required.

Source protection zones

Groundwater Source Protection Zone

Groundwater supply wells may have associated large zones of contribution in which water flows to a well. These zones of contribution may extend into areas where potential contaminants are being introduced to groundwater, thereby compromising the quality of the well water. Potential sources of contamination include landspreading of organic wastes, fertilizers, wastewater discharges, industrial discharges, etc. TEC Ltd can determine the zone of contribution for supply wells and then the corresponding inner and outer source protection area can be determined. Activities in the source protection areas can then be examined and controlled to prevent pollution. Tracer testing may also be carried out to determine the source of contaminants to a groundwater supply.

Hydrogeological assessments

A detailed examination of the hydrogeological and geological regime of any considerable development site is a requirement for most environmental impact assessments. This is especially the case with developments in sensitive localities where a change in the groundwater flow regime may have a significant impact. TEC Ltd have the expertise to complete hydrogeological assessments across a broad spectrum of developments in a cost effective yet comprehensive manner.

Contaminated land / Pollution investigations

Groundwater and Contaminated Land

TEC Ltd can carry out pollution investigations for a wide spectrum of scenarios. These range from risk assessments, site investigations and remediation strategies for brownfield sites such as petrol stations, to the assessment and remediation of smaller point source pollution sources such as domestic heating oil spills.

TEC Ltd can also carry out pollution invstigations of watercourse, wells or other receptors arising from onsite wastewater treatment. Tracer testing can also be carried out where there is uncertainty regarding a potential source of pollution.
